Six Ways to Celebrate Mother’s Day in Austin

May 05, 2016

Show your Momma just how much you love her by doing something special for her next weekend. Need some creative ideas for what to do in town that don’t include going to a restaurant? We’ve rounded up six ideas for gifts and outings that will definitely impress Mommy Dearest.

For Moms Who Like to Shop: May Pop Up at Hotel San Jose
Have Mom pick out the gift she really wants! Local designers Canoe, Elisha Marie, Eloi, OH! Fox and Lick Honest Ice Cream will be selling some special Mother's Day Gift Packs. Also, Javelina Ranch will be selling custom vases with flower bouquets!
Noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Free.
Hotel San Jose, 1316 S Congress Avenue

For Moms With Fine Taste: Mother's Day Whisky & Chocolate Tasting at Backbeat
If Mom appreciates a good whisky, Austin’s hottest new bar, Backbeat, is hosting an intimate experience that will wet her whistle. 3-5 p.m. on Saturday. $50.
Backbeat, 1300 South Lamar Boulevard

For Mom’s With Old-School Sensibility: Mother’s Day Victorian Tea
Kick it up a notch by treating Mom to a traditional Victoria Tea! The Driskill’s Mother’s Day Tea services include fresh scones, sandwiches, classic pastries, as well as tea and champagne. 3 p.m. $46 for adults; $23 for children. Make a reservation by calling 512-391-7227.
The Driskill Hotel, 604 Brazos Street

For Moms Who’d Rather Chill: Get Her Something She’ll Love

If you’re just looking for a nice gift, consider getting your mom something from a local business. You can’t go wrong with a gift certificate for one of Viva Day Spa’s relaxing Mother’s Day-themed spa treatments.  We also love Chocolaterie Tessa’s decadent boxed assortments,  jewelry from fail, flower arrangements from Bricolage, and anything from Mockingbird Domestics or Kettle and Brine.

For Moms Who Dig Country:

Enjoy crawfish and country music on Sunday while supporting Austin Pets Alive! at the same time. County crooner Dale Watson plays at 3 p.m. and Tucson-based Americana group Laura and the Killed Men play at 4:30 p.m. Doors open at 2:30 p.m. $12 gets you a 3-pound plate of crawfish.
Spiderhouse Cafe & Ballroom, 2908 and 2906 Fruth Street

For Moms Who Love Classic Films: The Sound of Music Mother’s Day Brunch Feast
Listen to Julie Andrews serenade seven children in the classical musical “The Sound of Music” while enjoying a Salzburg inspired four-course brunch! (If your mom isn’t into musicals, the Alamo Drafthouse at Lamar Union is having a decadent Breakfast at Tiffany’s Mother’s Day Brunch at noon). Sunday at 12:05 p.m. $65.
Alamo Drafthouse Lakeline, F, 14028 US-182

Why I'm Closing Small Coffee
Why I'm Closing Small Coffee

After four years of being in business, I’m saying goodbye. While reflecting on how I would craft this final blog, I thought about how the process of starting and owning my own business is—if not more—important than why I’m letting it go. So, let me take you back to April 2013 when that entrepreneur spark was ignited.

I’m turning our lens to Sarah Frankie because I’ve always impressed by her resilience, and she always comes to the “office” with lots of energy, a to-do list, and cool boots.
